Become an Orton-Gillingham Tutor

If you are passionate about helping individuals with dyslexia learn to read, we are happy to help guide you on your journey toward becoming an Orton-Gillingham Academy-trained tutor.

The Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) offers four levels of training, each designed to build increasingly advanced knowledge and clinical expertise.


Classroom Educator

Designed for classroom teachers and general education professionals, this introductory level provides practical, evidence-based strategies for teaching reading in whole-class and small-group settings. It is ideal for educators who want to better support students who need supplemental literacy instruction.

Requirements:

  • 30 hours of coursework

  • 50 supervised practicum lessons/hours, a minimum of 5 of which will be observed by your training supervisors

Associate Level

The Associate Level prepares practitioners to provide individualized or small-group instruction for struggling readers of all ages. Training emphasizes the diagnostic and prescriptive nature of the Orton-Gillingham approach and develops the skills needed to deliver effective, multisensory literacy intervention.

Requirements:

  • 70 hours of coursework

  • 100 supervised practicum lessons/hours, a minimum of 10 of which will be observed by your training supervisors

Clinical Level

The Clinical Level is intended for practitioners who have successfully completed Associate Level training and practicum requirements. This advanced training expands and deepens Orton-Gillingham knowledge, preparing tutors to work with students who have more complex learning profiles and require highly individualized instruction.

Requirements:

  • 100 hours of advanced coursework

  • 200 supervised practicum lessons/hours, a minimum of 10 of which will be observed by your training supervisors

Fellow Level

The Fellow Level is the highest credential awarded by the Orton-Gillingham Academy. Fellows are experienced practitioners who have completed both Associate and Certified Level training and are qualified to train and mentor future Orton-Gillingham practitioners.

Requirements:

  • 100 hours of advanced coursework

  • 300 supervised practicum lessons completed over approximately three years, with a minimum of 10 observations of the Fellow-in-Training by a Fellow in a variety of settings, for example: teaching courses, supervising trainees, conducting observations, and giving feedback to trainees
