We are a nonprofit center dedicated to the Orton‑Gillingham Approach, as developed by Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham. The Orton-Gillingham Approach is the gold-standard of dyslexia tutoring, supported by over 80 years of convergent research.

Empower Learning, Elevate Futures

The Orton-Gillingham Dyslexia Center (OGDC) provides expert dyslexia tutoring and academic testing throughout the Portland–Vancouver metropolitan area. Our instruction follows the standards and guidelines of the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).

Every tutor at OGDC has received training through the Orton-Gillingham Academy. We are committed to providing individualized, evidence-based instruction that helps students build the skills, confidence, and tools they need to become successful readers and learners.

In addition to individualized tutoring, we offer academic testing services to help families better understand their child’s learning needs and advocate for appropriate educational support.

Although our center serves the Portland–Vancouver area, we are also part of a broader network of OGA-trained professionals. We can help connect families with Orton-Gillingham Academy-trained tutors throughout Oregon and Washington.

Dyslexia is a neurobiological difference in the way the brain processes language, sounds and written symbols. It is not a reflection of a person’s intelligence, motivation or effort. For many individuals with dyslexia, the primary challenge is developing connections between letters and sounds. This can make it difficult to blend sounds into words and to read words, sentences, and paragraphs accurately and fluently, with ease.

The Orton-Gillingham Definition of Dyslexia

Signs and Symptoms of Dyslexia

Orton-Gillingham Tutoring

Orton-Gillingham tutoring is an approach, not a program. It is diagnostic and prescriptive, meaning that each lesson is individually tailored to your child’s current needs and level, and proceeds as the child masters previous concepts. This distinction is what sets us apart from other dyslexia tutoring techniques.

Dyslexia Testing

We provide starndardized academic testing as a baseline for determining if dyslexia tutoring is appropriate for you/your child. If neuropsychological testing is indicated, we will refer you to our partner organization, Webb Psychological Services. We may be able to provide financial assistance for this testing.

Tutor Training

We have close relationships with several Orton-Gillingham Fellows who can provide training in the Orton-Gillingham Approach.

We can register you with one of our Fellows, on several different training schedules.

Advocacy

As a nonprofit, we don’t participate in lobbying efforts, but we do have the ability to reach out and educate legislators about the urgent crisis in reading in the state of Oregon, as demonstated by our ranking as 50th out of 50 states in 4th grade readling scores.
